How to create drop-down menus in WordPress 3.0

October 23rd, 2012 by admin

Adding extra pages to your menu as drop-down items is simple in WordPress. Starting with WordPress 3.0 it is as simple as understanding the parent-child relationships of your pages.

Thanks. Can a vertical menu be done and keep the styling intact? Yes. But you will need to be comfortable writing the code, as it is a daunting task otherwise. Waaaay too complicated for us to do a video on.

    Best of luck!?

Thanks. These videos are fantastic, btw….thanks for them. I have? not done much with WordPress because I have always been mystified over the control of menus. Is it possible to move the main horizontal menu over to a sidebar, keeping it’s styling intact? I would like it to be a vertical menu except with horizontal “flyouts” instead of vertical dropdowns.

Are you using the same theme as demonstrated in this video?? Not all themes out there support this method. See my comments below; there is a more recent video on custom menus that works better. This method is now pretty uncommon.

So far as I know, it’s pretty much unlimited. Be careful though, multiple levels of drop-down menus can be off-putting to some visitors. Especially if you go more than one or two levels deep

It’s not that you can’t, but you probably? shouldn’t; at least don’t go overboard. 🙂

How many levels of “child” pages can there be? In other words, you have “testimonial” as a child of “about us” but what if there was another page “Europe” that was a child of testimonial? Does WordPress create a? flyout for that page when you hover over “testimonial”?

Please? look at the comments below. I have a video on custom menus which supersedes this one as the “proper” way to create drop-downs.

Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. Seems so obvious now but it was not clear when? I was trying to figure out how to do it earlier today. Great video, thanks for the help.

You will want to create a custom menu instead of using the default menu. From there it should be possible to? create a drop down such as you describe.

You will probably want to watch my video titled “How to create a custom menu in WordPress” as this is the preferred way to create drop-downs. It’s? how we do it when creating sites for clients, and works well with Twenty Eleven.

I’m with Dranet, I have built my blog around twentyeleven, curious if there is a way to do this with that theme??

Good clear tutorial – thanks. Can you tell me how to made a menu un? clickable? Say in your Cupcake site, if the ‘testimonials’ was under a menu heading that had no content.
In my case I want a menu heading of ‘Images’ and a drop down of several gallery pages but I down want to be able to click on the ‘Images’ tab. Hope you can help – it’s driving me mad!
    Kind regards, Penelope
