WordPress Tutorial – How to Update Your .htaccess File to Use Permalinks

October 5th, 2012 by admin

zahlm.com With some website hosts, it is necessary to update your .htaccess file in order to take advantage of pretty permalinks. The only trouble is that many times, you cannot see the .htaccess file in your file manager. The solution really depends on your host. I do my best to help you figure out how to fix this issue, but if this does not help you, I would suggest calling the tech support line of your host. I would also suggest checking your host’s knowledgebase. To get the code that you have to insert into your .htaccess file, look at the “using permalinks” page on wordpress.org.

YouTube does not allow me to post code. If you look at the “using permalinks” page on wordpress (org), you will find? the code you need. It is about half way down the page.

@cliobaby Hi, thanks for watching the video. Sorry if I missed something. I would try renaming the existing .htaccess file as a backup, then upload a fresh .htaccess file just in case your file manager or FTP program isn’t overwriting the existing file properly. Beyond that, the solution is very host specific. You would have to get back with your host provider or Google the issue with that? specific host and see if anyone has found a solution. HostGator doesn’t have these issues…

hi thanks for the upload, it was quite helpful, only thing is that ur video ended before u said what one can do if they are unable to see the .htaccess file they have uploaded. I was able to make this file visible, with some assistance from my host provider. After it was made visible I tried to save the changes again on my wordpress permalink settings section but it still came up with the same message; you should update ur .htaccess? now. What am I doing wrong? Please help am at my wits end lol
